Food Contact Materials Testing
Our Food Contact Materials services define and perform compliance tests for all materials intended to come into contact with food products throughout the supply chain.
The safety of Food Contact Materials (FCM) is a key part of food safety. (FCMs play a fundamental role in guaranteeing the quality and integrity of food products. They are used from the earliest stages of production (e.g. harvesting), in transport and processing, right up to the packaging of the food which, in addition to protecting it, conveys essential information to the consumer through labelling (ingredients, nutritional information, expiry date, etc.).
The main purpose of the regulation and the resulting controls on FCMs is to ensure that they do not alter the organoleptic characteristics of packaged food and do not release substances that could endanger human health.
Cotecna Group laboratories are able to provide a range of analytical controls for FCMs, that includes permeability to gases, migration testing, residual content analysis, detection of undesirable or unintentionally added substances (NIAS), and organoleptic analysis.
The samples we analyse include all categories of materials, such as plastics, paper and paperboard, stainless steel, metals and alloys, ceramics and other FCM.
